In a notable move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was triggered by public anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Political Agreement
According to the formal pact, the positions for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Discussions Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
