At least 64 people were killed in a police operation targeting the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in the Brazilian city's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the region's history.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. Over 80 people were arrested.
Violent conflicts commenced when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on the morning of the operation. The Red Command responded with shooting, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials stated.
